We will keep everyone updated on here and our status page <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/u3pYCVVGQq\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/t.co\/u3pYCVVGQq<\/a> as we know more.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Bitfinex (@bitfinex) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bitfinex\/status\/41640448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">February 28, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, data from <a href=\"https:\/\/bitfinex.statuspage.io\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bitfinex&#8217;s status page<\/a> shows that site response time and data throughput started to vary dramatically at 6:40 am GMT, eventually reaching a point where the site crashed around 8:00 am GMT, spurring the exchange to respond.<\/p>\n<p>With Bitfinex hosting some of the most prominent cryptocurrency traders <a href=\"https:\/\/uniquehot.com\/2020\/02\/11\/why-crazy-profitable-bitcoin-whale-warning-brutal-crash\/\">(like J0E007)<\/a>, many immediately wondered how the unexpected temporary closure of the exchange was affecting the Bitcoin market.<\/p>\n<p>Although no strict correlation has been determined, our analysis found that BTC began showing signs of weakness once the DDoS attack started.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bitcoin Seemingly Reacts Negatively to Bitfinex News<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Below is an extremely short-term chart of Bitcoin&#8217;s price created by NewsBTC showing trends before, during, and after the DDoS attack.<\/p>\n<p>The first vertical line (blue) is when Bitfinex started to report issues, with the site lagging and data throughput decreasing. In the minute after Bitfinex&#8217;s status page reported this, BTC fell by $20.<\/p>\n<p>The second vertical line (more transparent blue) was when the seeming DDoS attack succeeded, marked by Bitfinex&#8217;s site response time hitting zero and data throughput flatlining. This seemingly marked the start of a steep decline that brought BTC from $8,740 to $8,560 \u2014 a drop of 2% \u2014 as of the time of writing this.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/b7A9l32C\/\" width=\"797\" height=\"448\"><\/p>\n<p>It isn&#8217;t clear if this is a spurious correlation, though Bitcoin falling on a top exchange reporting issues isn&#8217;t exactly unprecedented or baseless.<\/p>\n<p>The crypto market is one based on emotion, where news events can cause dramatic moves in the market.
